Two years ago, I gave birth to my daughter and I can assure you it’s a day that I will never forget.
I was so excited to meet this little girl I had been carrying for the past 9 months.
I was in my hospital room feeling good, thinking everything was fine and then all of a sudden I’m being rushed into the operating room for an emergency c-section.
Talk about a crazy rollercoaster of emotions within in the span of about 20 minutes.
Becoming a mom is such an amazing gift, but at the same time it can turn your world upside down.
You’ve just welcomed a new life into the world. You’ve got new responsibilities and priorities.
You’re no longer pregnant, but still look and feel like you’re about six months along. You feel unattractive and uncomfortable in your own skin. Things just don’t look or fit the same as they once did.
Mirrors … let’s not even go there. You and the mirror are no longer friends and you’re pretty certain that relationship won’t be changing any time soon.
Last, but not least, let’s not forget to mention the emotional rollercoaster you’re on. You’re excited, you’re scared, you’re exhausted, you’ve never been happier or more in love, and at the same time you’re completely overwhelmed and stressed out.
Oh … AND don’t forget you still have the baby weight to lose asap. Yeah, right. Who’s even got time to think about that right now?!

Yeah, I thought so. That’s pretty much how I felt too.
But there’s good news …
I remember people laughing at me during my pregnancy when I told them I wanted to get my body back after I gave birth.
They laughed and said things like, “Yeah right. Good luck with that! It’s just not going to happen.”
I’d seen friends and clients of mine get into the best shape of their lives AFTER having babies so I knew it was possible … I just wasn’t sure if it was possible for ME.
I’m not going to say it was easy. It certainly wasn’t and it didn’t happen overnight.
I often wondered if those people were right in telling me my body was doomed forever now that I was a mom.
But they were WRONG.
I am now in better shape and physically stronger than I have ever been.
Here’s the Deal…
Throughout pregnancy our bodies go through a drastic change in 9 months. It really is incredible what the female body can go through in such a short period.
Then there’s the whole process of giving birth!
Whether you have a fairly uncomplicated delivery, emergency c-section like I did, tearing, or other complications, your body needs time to heal and recover during the early postpartum period.
Many exercise programs, and even many personal trainers, don’t allow for this and will have you jump straight back into exercises that are just not safe, or smart, to do within the first few months of giving birth. (Don’t even get me started on mommy and me bootcamps and popular home workout DVD programs being marketed to new moms.)
I’ve had clients being cleared by their doctors to exercise as soon as four weeks after having a c-section … a major abdominal surgery.
This is simply crazy!
It’s no surprise so many women struggle to get back in shape.
Unfortunately, when it comes to postpartum recovery and exercise recommendations there’s really not a lot of helpful information out there.
If you’re like most new moms your doctor didn’t provide much guidance either.
